Digital SAT Reading & Writing: Complete Guide
How the Digital SAT Reading & Writing section is structured, what it tests, and why short passages replaced long ones.
Reading & Writing replaced the separate Reading and Writing & Language sections from the paper SAT with one combined, shorter-passage section — delivered in two adaptive modules.
Structure & timing
- Two modules, 64 minutes total, about 54 questions combined.
- Each question is paired with its own short passage (or passage pair) — no more multi-question long passages.
What's tested
- Information & Ideas — central ideas, details, inferences, and command of evidence.
- Craft & Structure — vocabulary in context, text structure, and cross-text connections.
- Expression of Ideas — rhetorical synthesis and effective transitions.
- Standard English Conventions — grammar, usage, and punctuation.
